Barium Stearate

Ba(C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂  |  CAS: 6865-35-6  |  HS: 29157090

Product Description

Barium Stearate is used principally as a co-stabiliser in PVC heat stabiliser systems — particularly in the barium-zinc (Ba/Zn) stabiliser packages that were historically common in flexible PVC applications and remain in use in markets with less stringent barium restrictions. It functions synergistically with zinc stearate in capturing HCl evolved during PVC thermal processing, extending the induction period before dehydrochlorination colour degradation occurs. Combined with lubricants, Ba/Zn packages provide both stabilisation and lubrication in a single system. MITCHEM supplies to PVC stabiliser formulators with full documentation.

Applications by Industry

PVC Heat Stabiliser (Ba/Zn System)

Co-stabiliser in barium-zinc PVC stabiliser systems — reacts with zinc chloride formed during PVC dehydrochlorination, regenerating zinc stearate and preventing catalytic degradation chain reaction.

PVC Processing Lubricant

Provides external lubrication in rigid and semi-rigid PVC profile and tube extrusion — reduces melt-metal adhesion and improves surface quality of extruded sections.

Plastics & Rubber Lubricant

Used as an internal lubricant in rubber and plastics processing to improve compound processability and release from mould surfaces.

Grease & Lubricant Applications

Minor application as a soap thickener in specialty greases where barium soap's hydrophobic properties are required for water-resistant lubrication.
