Zinc Oxide

ZnO  |  CAS: 1314-13-2  |  HS: 28170010

Product Description

Zinc Oxide is one of the most multifunctional metal oxide compounds in industrial chemistry — simultaneously essential in rubber vulcanisation, sunscreen UV protection, pharmaceutical wound healing, ceramics, and electronics. In rubber manufacturing it is the primary vulcanisation activator — forming zinc-stearate complexes that catalyse sulphur cross-linking of rubber chains. In cosmetics and sunscreen, its broad-spectrum UV-A/UV-B absorption and inert biocompatibility make it the preferred mineral UV filter and skin-soothing agent. MITCHEM supplies French Process (indirect) and American Process grades with appropriate certifications for rubber, pharma, and cosmetic applications.

Applications by Industry

Rubber Vulcanisation Activator

The essential activator for sulphur vulcanisation of natural and synthetic rubber — forms zinc-stearate complexes that dramatically accelerate cross-link formation, determining vulcanisate properties in tyres, belts, hoses, and moulded goods.

Sunscreen & Cosmetics (UV Filter)

The broadest-spectrum mineral UV filter (UV-A + UV-B); non-comedogenic, inert, and suitable for sensitive and infant skin — the primary active in physical sunscreen formulations and mineral UV cosmetics.

Pharmaceutical (Wound Healing)

Active ingredient in zinc oxide ointments, calamine lotion, and nappy rash creams; astringent, mild antiseptic, and barrier-forming properties support wound healing and skin protection.

Ceramics & Glass (Flux)

Used as a flux and opacifier in ceramic glazes and frits, reducing melting temperature, improving thermal shock resistance, and producing matte glaze effects in sanitaryware and tiles.
