Barium Sulphate
BaSO₄ | CAS: 7727-43-7 | HS: 28332700
Product Description
Barium Sulphate is available from MITCHEM in both ground natural (barite) and precipitated grades, each serving distinct performance requirements. The precipitated grade (Blanc Fixe) delivers ultra-fine, controlled particle size with high brightness (>95% whiteness), chemical inertness, and UV resistance — making it the extender pigment of choice in premium automotive topcoats, powder coatings, and engineering plastics. In oil and gas drilling, ground barite is the standard weighting agent for borehole pressure control. MITCHEM supplies consistent particle size distribution and whiteness certification with every shipment.
Applications by Industry
Precipitated BaSO₄ improves hiding power, film hardness, gloss uniformity, and scratch resistance in automotive, industrial, and powder coatings without affecting drying time or colour development.
Used as a dense, chemically inert filler in engineering plastics, rubber compounds, and masterbatches to increase weight, reduce cost, and improve surface finish.
Pharmaceutical-grade BaSO₄ suspension is the standard oral contrast agent for gastrointestinal X-ray and CT imaging due to its total X-ray opacity and biological inertness.
Ground barite (natural BaSO₄) is the primary weighting agent in water-based and oil-based drilling muds, controlling borehole hydrostatic pressure and preventing blowouts.
Used as a coating pigment and filler in premium coated papers and paperboard, improving brightness, opacity, and printability.
